Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce has taken to social networking site Twitter in order to share his delight at striker Jermain Defoe’s recent interview praising the club’s supporters.

The former Bolton Wanderers man was appointed as Sunderland’s new manager ast October, joining a club who were at the time struggling at the bottom of the table without a Premier League victory.

Despite the odds being stacked agains them, the Black Cats managed to avoid relegation to the Championship come May with the club’s supporters playing a key role with their loyal backing.

Allardyce has given a glowing reference to the club’s fans on a number of occasions since his arrival at the Stadium of Light, and he once again took the time to offer his approval via Twitter.

Sunderland fans have always backed their club in numbers both at the Stadium of Light and on their travels, but what arguably sets them apart is their backing when the team needs it most.

The club have twice posted shocking Premier League points tallies this side of the millennium, and over the past few seasons the club have managed to stave off relegation against the odds.

However, rarely have the fans turned on their side where others might, and with more realistic funds available, manager Allarduce now has the freedom to start building towards a top-10 spot.
