Blackburn Rovers defender Grant Hanley is keen on a move to Newcastle United, report The Sun.

The report claims Newcastle have made 'initial contact' with Blackburn over a transfer, with Hanley receptive to a potential switch.

Hanley was a regular for Blackburn last season, making 44 of a possible 46 appearances for the club in the Championship.

Experienced in the division and good in the air, he is just the type of defender Newcastle need if they are to quickly adjust to life in the Championship.

They have a need for a player of Hanley's style, having terminated the contract of captain Fabricio Coloccini earlier this week to allow the veteran to return to Argentina.

24-year-old Hanley has been at Blackburn since signing as a teenager, but could consider Newcastle present a desirable new challenge for him.

Rovers have struggled to even get near the promotion hunt since being relegated from the Premier League in 2012, and while they have a new manager this season in Paul Lambert, Rafa Benitez's Newcastle are among the favourites to win promotion.
