Speaking to the club’s official website, Rafa Benitez has expressed his pleasure at securing the signing of Jesus Gamez.

Gamez became Benitez’s fourth signing of the summer transfer window on Friday, completing a move from Atletico Madrid.

He joins Matz Sels, Dwight Gayle and Matt Ritchie in having joined the club in this summer transfer window. He has been brought in to add some much needed quality to a defence that struggled in the Premier League last season.

And Benitez has shared his pleasure at securing the Spaniard’s signature, saying he thinks the full back will bring balance to his team.

"I am really pleased to bring Jesus here to Newcastle,” he told nufc.co.uk.

"He is experienced, I know he has great character and, importantly, he is an excellent professional. I am sure he will give balance to the team."

It now remains to be seen what Gamez’s arrival at St James’ Park will mean about the future of Daryl Janmaat.

The Dutch full back has been linked with a move away from the club this summer following their relegation to the Championship.

They would have been loathe to lose the Dutchman without having a sufficient replacement available in the squad.

They now have that after completing the signing of Gamez, and it will be interesting to see if Janmaat completes a move away in the coming weeks.
