Speaking to the Chronicle, Matt Ritchie has said he has been impressed with the high quality training at Newcastle United so far.

The winger became Rafa Benitez’s third signing of the transfer window when he secured a move from Bournemouth last week.

His move has come as something of a surprise to some given he has given up Premier league football to head back into the Championship with the Magpies.

Nonetheless he has made the move to St James’ Park and is now training with them as their pre-season schedule gets underway and he says he has been impressed by the standard of the work that he has been a part of so far.

“When a club like Newcastle comes calling you can’t say no, especially with the size of the club, the structure and the manager here,” he told the Chronicle.

“It has been fantastic and I have really enjoyed the first couple of days. The training has been very high quality and I am looking forward to the start of the season.”

Ritchie’s comments on training will come as good news to Newcastle United fans ahead of the new season.

Last summer was something of a disjointed affair under Steve McClaren with the manager describing a tour of the USA as ‘not ideal’ to the Express while they also struggled in the transfer market.

The poor summer planning had a big effect on the season that followed, and Magpies fans will be pleased by Ritchie’s suggestion that things are very different under the new regime.
