He held talks with Manchester City and their new boss Pep Guardiola but Boro's offer of a two-year deal was too much for him not to accept.

Boro sources have told HTC Sport that they are happy to get their man.

"Nothing is done until he puts pen to paper but the club are happy, he is a big name."

Valdes will have his medical before signing his deal but he could even feature in their opening friendly at York City on Saturday.

The Catalan 'keeper spent 14 years at Barcelona before joining Manchester United in 2015, but he failed to make Old Trafford home and only made two appearances for the Red Devils.
