According to the Chronicle, Everton and West Ham United were also interested in Newcastle United-bound Jesus Gamez.

The Atletico Madrid defender is set to make a move to St James’ Park in the coming days, with the Chronicle reporting that the club hope to have him on Tyneside for talks in the next 24 hours.

Should they secure his signature he will become the club’s fourth signing of the transfer window in what may prove to be a busy summer.

Manager Rafa Benitez completed three signings last week, as goalkeeper Matz Selz, Matt Ritchie and Dwight Gayle all joined the club.

Improving the defence is now a priority for the Spanish boss and that has led to him targeting right back Gamez.

It seems he had to work hard to secure his signature though, with the Chronicle reporting that Premier League duo Everton and West Ham United were also keen.

Luckily for the Magpies, Benitez’s sales pitch and Newcastle’s finances persuaded Gamez to make Tyneside his new home.

According to the newspaper, they are offering better wages than any team outside of the top four in Spain, despite having dropped in England’s second tier.
