Rafael Benitez has already added a goalkeeper, a winger, and a striker this window but desperately needs to strengthen his defence after seeing Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini leave already this summer.
Whilst a deal for Atletico Madrid man Jesus Gamez appears to be moving towards completion, the Magpies have apparently looked closer to home and have made contact with Blackburn about bringing Hanley to St. James' Park.
The 24-year-old Scottish international is no glamour signing, but would bring a wealth of experience to the relegated club having made 200 appearances for Rovers already in his career.
Hanley has the advantage of having played for four years as a regular in the Championship for Rovers, and has been club captain for the last two and a half of those.
He will bring leadership to the Magpies backline, something which is sorely missing with first-choice pair Jamaal Lascelles and Chancel Mbemba, who are just 22 and 21 respectively.
However, it appears as though the opinions of Newcastle fans on the potential signing of Hanley are rather mixed.
Some supporters believe that it would be a good move to bring in the defender as Benitez looks to add more Championship nous and depth to his squad.
Hanley would be a great signing for what we need & where we are. Not gonna be pretty away from home and players like him are needed. #NUFC— Daniel (@danjpeg) July 7, 2016
Grant Hanley coming by sound of things, brilliant leader of club and country with experience of both leagues, just what we needed #nufc— Brad Burton (@BradNufcBurton) July 7, 2016
Hanley is better than Taylor and Colo put together.Great strength and commanding in the air. Great for the Scotland team too #nufc— peter drummond (@tartandrumstick) July 7, 2016
For all the holes in Hanley's game, we must remember that we now have a world class manager. At 24, he would undoubtedly improve. #NUFC— NUFC 360 (@NUFC360) July 7, 2016
Hanley is mike Williamson's replacement. that's 50 steps in the right direction. not a starter but very good squad player to have. #NUFC— HenryHcode (@HenryHcode) July 7, 2016
Grant Hanley is the definition of an old-school, no nonsense, hard-hitting defender. Strikers know they're in for a battle against him— Evin (@EvG_Football) July 7, 2016
Dunno why people are being negative about Hanley. We're in c'ship he's big & experienced at this level & a leader. In Rafa I trust. #NUFC— Craig (@1CraigAllan) July 7, 2016
Grant Hanley seems an utterly sensible signing. What is happening to my club? #NUFC— Andy Daly (@AndyDaly141) July 7, 2016
However, others were far less convinced and questioned whether Hanley was the calibre of player needed for the club to launch a promotion push.
Can only hope Grant Hanley is in the back-up pile for a season— Jordan (@__Stiva) July 7, 2016
Not convinced about Hanley. He is brave as a lion but is slightly slow and distribution is not the best. Still, young and may improve.— Unofficial Nufc (@Unofficial_NUFC) July 7, 2016
Hanley certainly carries a lot of Championship experience, but I'd view him as more of a squad player. Definitely not a starter for me #NUFC— Sweeninho (@Sweeninho9) July 7, 2016
Ohhhh, Grant Hanley. The first slip-up of the summer..... not a fan at all #NUFC— Marc Jobling (@MarcJobling) July 7, 2016
Really don't want to sign grant Hanley— Oli (@Wxjnaldum) July 7, 2016
