Is it time for Tottenham to shell out £20m plus for Mateo Musacchio?

AC Milan are trying to sign the Villarreal defender.

Tottenham Hotspur defenders Toby Alderweireld and Kevin Wimmer are under pressure to begin the season in peak condition, after the injury suffered by Jan Vertonghen cut the margin for error.

The club's defensive options being stretched early on is far from ideal, and now is the time for Spurs to be considering whether or not to add another centre-back to their ranks.

That is where long term target Mateo Musacchio fits in, a player The Mirror at one stage claimed the club had an agreement to sign.

He was an early target of Mauricio Pochettino in 2014, until Spurs decided he was too costly and moved for Federico Fazio instead.

This did not work out well, and Fazio is a player they would surely like to offload as part of any deal for Villarreal ace Musacchio.

While the Argentine centre-back remains highly valued by Villarreal, he has been linked with an exit as of late. Football Italia report AC Milan are highly interested in the defender, while Football Espana reported just this week that he is a target for Atletico Madrid.

Musacchio's arrival would ensure Spurs have the best quartet of centre-backs in the league, and solidify a key strength.

They are currently already stretched however, and with Champions League football to balance, now could be the time to shell out upwards of £20 million to sign the defender.

At 25, his best years are ahead of him, and he would further strengthen the spine of the team. While priority of course needs to be given to bringing in a striker, interest from Spanish and Italian sides in Musacchio could potentially force their hands into re-entering the race.
