The Newcastle United midfielder has struggled for fitness and subsequently for form.
According to a recent report from Turkish website Haber Turk, Fenerbahce are interested in signing Newcastle United midfielder Siem de Jong this summer. However Magpies manager Rafa Benitez would be wise to keep hold of the Dutchman ahead of the new campaign.
The 27-year-old has struggled with injuries since arriving at the club from Ajax, but now back to full fitness he could be like a new signing for Newcastle ahead of one of the most important seasons in their history.
Benitez will know it is vital for Newcastle to earn immediate promotion back to the top flight and in de Jong they have a player who could take the Championship by storm.
He may have only scored two goals and provided one assist in 26 appearances for the Magpies to date, but if he can rediscover his Ajax form he could be exactly what Benitez needs to navigate the choppy and unpredictable waters of the English second tier.
In Holland de Jong scored 78 goals and provided 48 assists and a step down in level could allow him to finally show what he is made of, bossing opponents and leading Newcastle back to the Premier League.
Some Newcastle fans may feel de Jong’s time us up, yet it is worth remembering that in his penultimate year at Ajax (the last time he was injury-free) he scored 16 goals and provided 10 assists.
If de Jong wants one final chance to prove his worth to Newcastle, sticking around for a promotion push would give him the perfect opportunity.
