Real Madrid's James Rodriguez in action with Jesus Gamez
Newcastle completed three signings last week, as goalkeeper Matz Sels, winger Matt Ritchie and striker Dwight Gayle arrived from Gent, Bournemouth and Crystal Palace respectively.
Now, with manager Rafael Benitez looking to re-shape his Magpies squad having been relegated from the Premier League, signing number four may not be too far away.
The Chronicle report that right back Jesus Gamez is closing in on a move to Newcastle, and is expected to fly to Tyneside in the next 24 hours to complete his move.
Gamez, 31, spent the majority of his career with Malaga, racking up more than 250 appearances for the Andalusian side before moving on to Atletico Madrid in 2014.
The Spaniard has only ever started 22 games for Atletico, and made just 11 appearances last season as he was used as cover for Spanish international Juanfran, whilst also offering cover at left back and centre back.
Now a free agent having been released by Atletico earlier this summer, Gamez looks set to pen a deal with Newcastle, with a move potentially being done inside the next 24 hours.
It's claimed that Gamez has been in talks with Newcastle over the past week, and after days of negotiations, a deal now appears close for him to link up with fellow Spaniard Benitez - and his arrival may prompt questions about the long-term future of current right back Daryl Janmaat.
