The tough-tackling Kenyan joined Spurs in an £11 million deal last week after spending two years with Southampton.
Alderweireld, who spent the 2014-15 season on loan with the Saints, knows first hand what a good player Wanyama is, and the Belgian says that the 25-year-old is comfortably one of the best midfielders in English football.
“Obviously I played with him at Southampton and I think he’s one of the best midfield players in the Premier League,” said the 27-year-old to Tottenham's official site.
“He’s strong, he can play with the ball and mentally he’s very strong too. He likes to work hard and that’s perfect for the team that we are building now.”
It remains to be seen who Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino rates higher - Wanyama or Eric Dier, who impressed in that defensive midfield role last season.
Whoever Pochettino's first-choice anchor man is this time around, Tottenham fans can rest easy in the knowledge that there is outstanding cover available.
With Spurs set for a Champions League campaign this season, it also gives the Argentine boss the welcome option of rotating both of them when needed.
While Tottenham fans seem delighted with Wanyama, a lot of supporters will still be desperate to see a striker signed.
