Steve Harper has encouraged Newcastle United to forget about winning the Championship next season, and simply concentrate on winning promotion - on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, which was broadcast on 5th July.

Newcastle are currently the heavy favourites to win promotion from the Championship next term, but Harper does not want them to believe their own hype.

The experienced stopper was part of the last Newcastle team to be promoted from the second tier, and he insists that the task will be a difficult one.

"The hype and everyone thinks it will be easy. It wasn’t easy last time. It’s tough. It’s a tough, tough league," Harper said.

"For Newcastle, all these people think they’re going to walk the league - just get up."

Newcastle bounced back immediately from relegation in 2009/10, and they will be determined to repeat that success next term.

The Magpies look in good shape for promotion - as Rafael Benitez has agreed to stay in charge.

Newcastle have also handed Benitez funds to spend, with the Spanish boss wasting no time in adding players to his squad.

Newcastle have already signed Matt Ritchie, Dwight Gayle and Matz Sels to their squad - as they aim to ensure they have the quality required to meet expectations next term.
