The 41-year-old former Tottenham, Bournemouth and Luton midfielder is currently with Motherwell, where he is assistant to Mark McGhee and was only handed a new extension in April.

However, Oldham are now understood to have made their move for Robinson - who is set to take his first step into management with The Latics.

Oldham Athletic manager John SheridanJohn Sheridan left Oldham in May

Oldham have been looking for a new after John Sheridan surprisingly quit the club to join Notts County in May, but they have now opted for Robinson - who is very highly regarded as an up-and-coming coach.

Robinson is also part of Northern Ireland's set-up, where he has worked with Michael O'Neill since the start of the Euro 2016 qualifiers - but it remains unlikely he will be able to continue in that role, given their games would clash going forward.

HITC Sport understands Robinson should be confirmed in the next 48 hours as Oldham new boss.

Former Leeds head coach Steve Evans was among the previous favourites for the role.
