Speaking to the Daily Mail, Glasgow Rangers assistant manager David Weir says Joey Barton will bring presence to the side next season.

Barton agreed a move to Ibrox last month as manager Mark Warburton moved to make him one of his first signings in this summer transfer window.

The midfielder’s arrival is highly anticipated at the club after he shone for Burnley while they won the Championship and secured a return to the Premier League last season.

Barton was targeted as Warburton looked to add some much needed experience to his relatively youthful squad and Weir says that the midfielder will be important to their team next season.

“Joey will bring a presence both as a person and a player,” he told the Daily Mail. “He was the best player in the English Championship last season. And it’s no mean feat to play in that league, with the number of competitive games there.”

It now remains to be seen what impact Barton can have on Rangers next season as they return to the Scottish Premiership.

There is already a lot of pressure on this current squad, with the Gers fans hoping to see their side challenging Celtic for the title once again.

If they are to do that, they will need Barton playing at the kind of level that he showed for Burnley in their title winning campaign last season.
