Tottenham need to add defensive cover and free agent Martin Caceres would be a quality option for minimal cost.

Tottenham Hotspur finished third in the Premier League last season, with Mauricio Pochettino receiving high praise for transforming his side into title contenders.

Their performances dropped in the latter stages of the campaign, however, as Spurs' relatively small squad struggled to cope with the physical demands of the Premier League's intense nature.

Spurs have been active in the transfer window, with interest in numerous strikers being reported. They should also focus on bringing in defensive cover, however, with Jan Vertonghen's injury record less than impressive. They do have Kevin Wimmer as an able deputy for the Belgian, but an extra experienced head would go a long way to enabling them to compete on all fronts next term.

Uruguay international Martin Caceres is available on a free transfer following his release from Juventus and he would make a terrific addition to the Tottenham side.

The 29-year-old suffered an Achilles injury in February that ruled him out for the rest of the season, but he is expected to be back ready to play for the start of the new campaign.

He joined Juventus on a permanent deal in the summer of 2012 following a successful loan spell, and went on to make 70 appearances for the Serie A club. He has 68 caps for Uruguay to his name and has a reputation within the game as a fantastic man-marker.

Caceres has undeniable pedigree within the game, with five Serie A titles and one La Liga crown among his achievements. He is an old school type defender with an element of South American flair and he has a big personality both on and off the pitch.

His tenacious approach to the game drew comparisons with Juve legend and fellow countryman Montero.

Should Spurs make a move for the Uruguayan, they would be getting a world-class defender with a winning mentality and experience of playing at the highest levels of the game. It would be a deal with minimal risk involved due to the lack of a transfer fee needed, and because of this it should be a no-brainer for the Tottenham hierarchy.
