Sheffield Wednesday have completed the signing of young Spurs midfielder Charlie Hayford.

Having been with the Londoners since the age of four, Hayford had most recently been turning out for the Spurs Under-18s side, but has signed a one-year deal at Hillsborough.

The young midfielder had spent a spell on trial at Wednesday last season, with it clear that he would not be offered a new contract at White Hart Lane.

“This is a massive football club and one that would appeal to any young footballer looking to make his mark in the game," Hayford told the club's website.

“I have no qualms about leaving the south for the north as this is a club and place that really appeals.

“I have really enjoyed my years with Spurs and learned from some top quality players. I was invited to train with the senior players under Andres Villas-Boas when I was 15 and playing at the tempo of the first team was a fantastic experience.

“The philosophy of Sheffield Wednesday is to play from the back, to play football, and that suits the way that I like to play.”

Hayford tweeted his delight at the move to Wednesday at the start of the month, before the official announcement from the club.

The move was confirmed by the Owls' official website early on Monday, and Hayford reiterated his excitement at becoming a pro footballer at a club as big as Wednesday, even though the real hard work starts now as he attempts to prove to his new club that he has a future at Championship level, earning an extended contract in the process.

Hayford can play anywhere across midfield, according to his academy profile on the Spurs site, and will hope to catch Carlos Carvalhal's eye in pre-season ahead of another promotion attempt.
