Middlesbrough have finalised the signing of Dutch midfielder Marten de Roon, paying just over £12million for his signature.

HITC Sport exclusively revealed last Monday that a deal had been agreed and now Boro have finalised the move on the day they returned for pre-season training.

The 25-year-old arrives from Serie A side Atalanta, after just one season with the Italian side following a switch from Heerenveen.

De Roon is Boro's third signing following on from the captures of Ajax's Danish international winger Viktor Fischer and Sporting Gijon Colombian defender Bernardo Espinosa.

The Dutchman also becomes the Teesside club's second most expensive signing, just falling short of the fee they paid for Brazilian striker Afonso Alves.

De Roon is a former Holland youth international, who came through Feyenoord's youth system but he joined rivals Sparta Rotterdam - where he made his senior debut.

He was snapped up by Heerenveen in 2012 before sealing a move to Italy last summer but he has now finalised his move to Boro by signing a four-year deal with the newly promoted club.
