The Benitez revolution at Newcastle has well and truly taken off this summer with the big money signings of Dwight Gayle, Matt Ritchie and Matz Sels, and fans can expect a few more high profile names to arrive at St. James’ Park before the start of the upcoming Championship campaign.
Benitez has been able to land most of his targets so far this summer but one man he could not convince to join him at St. James’ Park is former Magpies star Dietmar Hamann.
In a recent interview with the Times, Hamann has revealed that Benitez had requested him to return back to Newcastle as his assistant manager but he decided to snub the offer.
The former Germany international told, “Rafa [Benítez] asked me to be his assistant at Newcastle which I turned down with a heavy heart.”
Hamann played for Newcastle for a solitary season in 1998 and his performances at St. James’ Park tempted then Liverpool manager Gerard Houlier to splash a sizeable £8 million on the ex-midfielder’s services.
