According to the Chronicle, Newcastle United will now turn their attention towards signing defenders after completing three deals this week.

Goalkeeper Matz Sels became their first signing of the summer on Tuesday after he completed a move from Gent.

Another two recruits followed him on Friday as Dwight Gayle and Matt Ritchie moved from Crystal Palace and Bournemouth respectively.

And with those two attacking signings secured, Rafa Benitez will now turn his attention towards improving the other end of the pitch.

According to the Chronicle, the Spaniard’s next targets will be defenders as he continues to build ahead of next season.

The Magpies are already working on a deal for a defender with both Premier League and Championship experience, likely a replacement for the departing Fabricio Coloccini.

However, central defence will not be only part of the backline strengthened, as Benitez also wants reinforcements at right back and left back.

So far no hints are given about who they may be, although Alvaro Arbeloa would certainly be the answer to one of those problems.

Regardless, it appears that the Magpies are not going to be stopping any time soon in what promises to be a very busy summer transfer window.
