John Arne Riise celebrates scoring against Manchester United

Former Liverpool defender John Arne Riise has criticised Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini on social networking site Twitter.

Riise was not impressed with the performance of Fellaini for Belgium against Wales on Friday evening.

The 28-year-old midfielder did not start the Euro 2016 quarter-final tie at Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Villeneuve-d’Ascq.

The former Everton man came on as a substitute at the break and played for the entire second half.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Moussa Dembele was an unused substitute for Belgium, as Wales came from a goal down to win 3-1.

Former Norway international left-back Riise was following the match, and he was surprised that Fellaini was preferred to Dembele by Belgium.

Belgium's Marouane Fellaini

Dembele was one of the best players for Tottenham last season, while Fellaini did not have a great campaign for United.

While the United midfielder has his own strengths and expertise, Dembele should have been used much more than he was by Belgium during the 2016 European Championship in France.

Dembele suffered an ankle injury against the Republic of Ireland in the group stage, and perhaps it was much more serious than originally thought…
