According to The Sun, Watford have turned down a £38 million bid for Odion Ighalo.
The report claims that Shanghai SIPG are looking at Ighalo as the ideal man to partner new signing Hulk in their attack, but their latest offer of £38 million was astonishingly turned down by Watford.
Former Napoli boss Walter Mazzarri has joined as the club’s new manager this summer as Watford’s owners, the Pozzo family, look to take the club to the next level, and big signings are expected.
Having said that, the club’s success last term has meant that a number of the club’s leading stars have become transfer targets for bigger clubs - no more so than forward Ighalo.
Ighalo joined as an unknown quantity two summers ago, but now he is widely regarded as one of the club’s most talented players after netting 35 goals in his 72 league matches.
The Nigeria international is now proven at Premier League level, and his success has attracted interest from Chinese Super League side Shanghai as they look to prise away Europe’s leading talent.
Managed by Sven-Goran Eriksson, Shanghai recently broke their transfer record to sign Brazilian striker Hulk, as reported by The Guardian, and they may have to do it again if they wish to make Ighalo their latest big-money acquisition.
