Report: Newcastle eye move for unnamed defender, could conclude deal by Monday

Newcastle United are reported to be close to completing a deal for a defender.

According to the Chronicle, Newcastle United are working hard on a deal for an unnamed defender.

The Magpies are expected to be busy this summer as Rafa Benitez builds a squad capable of securing a quick return to the Premier League.

He has already completed deasl for goalkeeper Matz Selz and striker Dwight Gayle while Matt Ritchie are expected to complete a move from Bournemouth in the near future.

They are unlikely to stop there though, with the Spaniard thought to be keen on building a balanced squad for the Championship campaign ahead.

One are he may look to improve is the defence, which one again struggled as they were relegated from the Premier League last season.

Indeed, it has been a problem area for the Magpies for a number of years as they have failed to strengthen that part of the team while focusing on other areas.

However, according to the Chronicle that is set to change this summer as Rafa Benitez is ‘working hard’ on a deal for a defender, and the move could be completed as early as Monday next week.

Who the player is remains to be seen, but with Fabricio Coloccini nearing an exit it is likely to be a central defender arriving at St James’ Park.
