Speaking to talkSPORT, Paul Merson has questioned the logic behind rumours suggesting Arsene Wenger should be the next England manager.

England are on the hunt for their next manager after Roy Hodgson resigned on Monday evening. That departure came following their humiliating exit from Euro 2016 after they were beaten by Iceland at the last 16 stage.

A number of names are likely to be on the shortlist to take charge, with the FA keen to ensure their next appointment is the right one moving forward.

One of the names who has been put forward is Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, whose contract expires next season.

Merson though, cannot understand those suggestions, suggesting that his former manager wouldn’t be suited to the role.

“They’re talking about Arsene Wenger, but every year we talk about Arsenal not winning the Premier League because tactically he’s not right,” he told talkSPORT.

“Arsene is a real hands-on coach, he does all the training, he does everything. But with international football you only see the players every now and then and there’s a lot of sitting around.”

It will certainly be interesting to see who England decide to turn to as their next manager after Hodgson’s departure.

A foreign coach could be a strong possibility, with there currently a lack of truly attractive English candidates in the game at present.

Wenger should be top of the list because of that, with his knowledge of the English game arguably better than anyone in the country at present.
