The Saints will hope they have unearthed another gem.
The 54-year old replaces Ronald Koeman at the helm and the new Saints boss is certainly something of an unknown quantity here in England.
He has pedigree in France however, managing Monaco, Lille, Lyon and most recently Nice. He led Nice to an impressive top four finish last season before leaving in May and other career highlights include a league title with Monaco and a Champions League semi-final with Lyon.
Puel is known for his commitment to promoting from within and it’s an ethos which will complement the Saints’ revered academy.
Southampton are a club which have become accustomed to change year in year out and they have managed to adapt and thrive after losing key figures such as Mauricio Pochettino, Adam Lallana and Morgan Schneiderlin in recent seasons.
Sadio Mane celebrates after scoring the second goal for Southampton
This summer has already seen Ronald Koeman leave to manage Everton, Sadio Mane head to Liverpool and Victor Wanyama join Spurs but Puel will be determined to steady the ship and focus on the future in the weeks to come.
Southampton fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the new appointment:
Will support Puel 100% but I am unsure if I am comfortable with the appointment, a bit of a gamble, obviously I hope it pays off#saintsfc— Ben Harding (@northamsoul7) June 30, 2016
Quietly excited about Claude Puel, theres something about the guy but I can't quite put my finger on it. Time will tell #SaintsFC— Callum James Guy (@CalCal256) June 30, 2016
Don't get people pointing at Puel's previous win percentage. Surely it's what he does with us that we should judge him on?— Chris No (@chrs00) June 30, 2016
This is a massive mistake with puel, back to the old days being blatantly the cheapest option. Time will tell but not confident at all— Johnny Parsons (@jayofficial13) June 30, 2016
It's a risk with only Ligue 1 experience behind Puel. However Pochettino was unknown when we signed him so anything can happen #Saintsfc— Peter Davies (@peterdav93) June 30, 2016
I like the appointment of Puel at Southampton. De Boer seemed a good fit, but Puel has a great track record with younger players. #SFC— Chris McHardy (@ChrisMcHardy19) June 30, 2016
