Gareth Bale urged to ‘unleash the dragon, let out the fire inside’ in tribute song

Wales Training - EURO 2016

Among the great sounds of Euro 2016 has been Wales fans belting out Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau (Land of my Fathers). Now, as they prepare to face Belgium in Friday’s quarter-final, they have a new song to sing. And this one is more pop than national anthem. Performed by a group of musicians in Madrid, it is dedicated to Gareth Bale.

Saluting Bale’s rise from a “young boy in Cardiff working hard on a dream” to becoming a cannon that “rips the world apart”, it urges the Wales forward to “unleash the dragon, let out the fire inside!”

The track was written by Emmet Crowley, a British music lecturer at the Alfonso X el Sabio university in Madrid, and his Costa Rican wife, who has also composed a song about the Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

Bale has shown every sign he could rip Europe apart this summer. He scored in each of Wales’ group games and assisted the decisive goal in the last-16 victory over Northern Ireland, supplying a cross that was turned by Gareth McAuley into his own net.

The Manic Street Preachers in May released their official Euro 2016 anthem for the Wales team, Together Stronger (C’mon Wales). It mentions many of the squad, with special attention paid in the chorus to Bale and Aaron Ramsey.

Gareth, Gareth – the lyrics

Young boy in Cardiff, working hard on a dream
He’s dedicated, got what it takes to succeed
Time has come to rise to the challenge with power, with strength and pride
From the valleys, unleash the dragon, let out the fire inside
Gareth, Gareth
The canon fires, rips the world apart
Gareth, Gareth
Ev’ry shot straight from the heart
For “El Galés”, un “galáctico”, a dream come true
Yet he stays focused, his mind is clear, he’ll see it through
Time has come to rise to the challenge with power, with strength and pride
From the valleys, unleash the dragon, let out the fire inside
Gareth, Gareth
The canon fires, rips the world apart
Gareth, Gareth
Ev’ry shot straight from the heart
