Brendan Rodgers has told the Glasgow Evening Times that he has been very impressed by Ryan Christie’s performances in Celtic training.

Rodgers has spoken of a desire to promote some of Celtic’s more promising youngsters into his first-team set up this season.

The Northern Irish boss has already invited Celtic’s younger stars to train with the senior squad during pre-season and Christie is one of the players to benefit from his new manager’s faith in youth.

Christie has been with Celtic’s team as they train in Slovenia, and the 21-year-old has caught the eye of the former Liverpool boss.

“We’ve got some kids here who have impressed me, like young Christie,” Rodgers said. “He’s a good mover and looks like he can score goals. When he gets a bit stronger he can do very well.

“He plays just around the corner off the striker. He’s a really bright player and it’s just a case of time to develop.”

Christie signed for Celtic last season, but he only made five Scottish Premiership appearances.

The attacking midfielder was loaned out to Inverness Caledonian Thistle for a sizeable chunk of the season, where he impressed with his performances.

It was initially expected that Christie could head out on loan again next term, but Rodgers’ words suggest that he may have a chance of being in the Bhoys’ first-team plans.

Celtic kick off their pre-season with a match against NK Celje, and it remains to be seen whether or not Christie will be involved.
