Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has revealed that Newcastle United had striker Dwight Gayle on their shortlist three years ago.
Gayle’s reputation quickly rose during his time at Posh during the 2012/13 campaign, when he smashed in 13 goals in 28 Championship appearances.
Gayle only spent just over half a season at Posh, but his performances attracted the attentions of top level clubs.
MacAnthony claims that both Norwich City and Newcastle were interested in Gayle, but the forward ended up moving to Crystal Palace.

Gayle has finished as Palace’s top scorer in each of the three seasons he has spent at Selhurst Park, but he now looks likely to complete a move to Newcastle.
HITC broke the news yesterday evening that Gayle had agreed terms with Newcastle, and the transfer is set to be finalised in the coming weeks.
Newcastle believe Gayle is the man who can fire them to an immediate promotion from the Championship.
Newcastle are also set to complete a deal for Matz Sels later today (Daily Mail), as Rafael Benitez’s side step up their recruitment drive.
