Villa are reportedly considering a move to bring in the 34-year-old from their local rivals.

West Brom's Rickie Lambert

New Aston Villa manager Roberto Di Matteo has already got his transfer plans underway with the signing of Bournemouth captain Tommy Elphick as he looks to undertake a revamp at the club following their relegation.

The defender has added Championship experience and leadership quality to the beleaguered side, but the Italian boss must now turn his attentions to strengthening other areas of his squad.

One name which has emerged as a reported target for the new management set-up is that of West Bromwich Albion striker Rickie Lambert.

The 34-year-old was linked on Tuesday with a cut-price move across Birmingham as Di Matteo aims to add more players with experience of lower-league English football.

Lambert would undoubtedly be something of a gamble; the former Liverpool man netted 27 goals in Southampton's promotion-winning season four years ago, but has found the net just four times across the last two campaigns at Anfield and the Hawthorns.

Rickie Lambert for England

However, the former England man would bring a wealth of experience in English football to Villa Park, and would be another much-needed calm old head in a dressing room full of foreign stars and young players.

His recent goal record hardly inspires confidence, though, and many Villa fans on Twitter were sceptical - to say the least - about a potential move for the striker.

However, others seemed less averse to the idea and suggested that he could be a decent option for Villa as they look the build the big squad needed to contend with the Championship's 46-match season.
