Graziano Pelle played a key role in helping Italy spring a surprise by knocking holders Spain out of Euro 2016 on Monday as it was his goal in stoppage-time that put the game beyond doubt and set up a quarter-final clash with world champions Germany.

The Southampton forward was unlucky not to give the Italians the lead early on as he forced an excellent save out of David de Gea, but it was the problems that he caused the Spanish defence that led to the free-kick that saw the Azzurri go in front.

His partnership with Eder and his movement in general was continually a thorn in the side of Vicente del Bosque's team.

And he was rewarded for his performance as another piece of excellent movement saw him volley home from close-range with a goal that very much resembled his strike against Belgium in their opening match of the tournament, which also came in added-time to seal a 2-0 win.

While many Saints supporters reacted with pride after watching one of their players score the goal that confirmed Italy's place in the last eight, some would have preferred the 30-year-old to have gone under the radar in the win given the number of key men that have left St Mary's in recent years, with former manager Ronald Koeman and midfielder Victor Wanyama being amongst the latest names to leave for Premier League rivals, while Sadio Mane does not appear to be too far behind (via BBC Sport).

Here is how fans of the south coast club reacted following Pelle's performance...
