Rafa Benitez is reportedly targeting signings in other positions first.

Signing a new left-back is not a priority for Newcastle United in this transfer window, according to the Chronicle.

Newcastle are expected to be busy this summer as Rafa Benitez aims to build a squad that can secure an instant return to the Premier League.

The defence is likely to be an area that he will look to improve given it has been a particularly weak spot for a number of years.

A new centre back or two are sure to arrive, especially given that Steven Taylor was allowed to leave the club at the end of last season.

However, one area that the club are not deeming as a priority is the left back position according to the Chronicle. As far as they are concerned, Rafa Benitez is looking at a host of other options instead in what is likely to be a busy summer.

It will be interesting to see who the Spaniard targets, with the Chronicle also claiming that he will be targeting British players to try and build a squad similar to the one that won promotion from the Championship in 2010.

That team was built around a British core containing the likes of Joey Barton, Steven Taylor and Kevin Nolan and perhaps Benitez is hoping to replicate the success they enjoyed under Chris Houghton.
