Why Celtic attacking midfielder Kris Commons could be a good signing for Newcastle United

Georginio Wijnaldum has been linked with moves away from Newcastle United in the summer transfer window.

According to The Chronicle, Italian club Roma are interested in signing Wijnaldum from Newcastle in the summer transfer window.

La Gazzetta dello Sport recently reported of Serie A outfit Napoli’s interest in the Netherlands international mifielder.

The Mirror claimed earlier this month that Premier League duo Everton and Southampton are monitoring the former PSV star.

Wijnaldum is a very attack-minded midfielder and is hugely talented, and it is unlikely that he would be willing to play in the Championship next season.

If the Netherlands international does leave the Magpies this summer, then Rafael Benitez’s side should make a move for Kris Commons.

The 32-year-old is also an attacking midfielder, and he is quite talented as well. The Scotsman would not exactly be a like-for-like replacement for Wijnaldum, but he would certainly be someone who could do the job for Newcastle.

During his time at Celtic, Commons has proved himself as a very creative player.

The 32-year-old knows English football inside out as well, having played for Stoke City, Nottingham Forest and Derby County in his career.

Commons did not play regularly for Celtic last season, and it remains to be seen if new manager Brendan Rodgers considers him part of his plans for the 2016-17 campaign.

Celtic are one of the biggest clubs in the world, but Newcastle are one of the biggest in England and Commons could find it tempting to play for Benitez at St. James’ Park.

Newcastle’s main aim next season will be to finish in the top two of the Championship, and signing Commons would enhance their chances of doing just that.
