Arsenal are keen on signing Alexandre Lacazette but face potential failure due to Lyon's asking price.

The Telegraph report Arsene Wenger has entered discussions with Lacazette's representatives over a switch, but is 'highly unlikely' to pay the £40 million the French side are asking.

Lacazette is one of France's most highly rated strikers even though he was surprisingly overlooked for Euro 2016.

Lyon's chairman Jean-Michel Aulas is one of football's toughest negotiators, and is likely to take a dim view of any low-ball offers.

PSG and West Ham are also in the hunt to sign Lacazette, The Telegraph report, while the striker's intentions are so far unclear.

Arsenal's best chance of landing the striker is if he pushes for a move and makes it clear he wants to join the Gunners specifically.

This is why Arsene Wenger's tactics of speaking to his representatives and finding out if this is possible, could be wise, before they engage in a transfer battle with Lyon.

If Lacazette demonstrates to his club a desire to leave and join Arsenal, it makes Lyon's task to keep him tougher, and could even result in the French side dropping their asking price.

If he does not push for a move, then if Arsenal are unwilling to pay the £40 million Lyon want then he is likely to stay put or sign for the team who will pay up.
