Lamela was a late substitute for Argentina, although did not take a penalty in the fateful shootout which decided the game.
Former national hero and Tottenham club icon Ossie Ardiles sent a message to the current Spurs star, with words of encouragement despite the defeat.
Lamela is coming off the back of a promising season at Tottenham, one which saw him establish himself as a key player in Mauricio Pochettino's plans.
The winger will now have a chance for some vital rest but will want to use his near misses as a motivating factor for the season ahead.
