Why Everton's John Stones should be excited to work with Ronald Koeman

The new Everton manager could help to develop Stones in a way Roberto Martinez couldn't.

If there is one player that should be excited about Ronald Koeman’s appointment at Everton it is John Stones.

The young defender had a disappointing season last year as he came in for stern criticism for his performances.

The biggest criticism was that he does not have the defensive ability or knowledge to make him the world-class centre back that many believe he could become.

Some criticised Roberto Martinez for that, saying the Spaniard had focused on encouraging Stones to play out from the back rather than improving his defending.

However, if there is one man that knows how to marry both of those talents perfectly, it is Ronald Koeman.

The Dutchman was one of the best ball playing centre backs to play in the game, winning the European Cup twice, La Liga four times as well as a European Championship with the Netherlands.

If there is anyone who can teach Stones the key aspects of being a successful central defender, it is the new Everton manager.

He also has a proven track record of developing defenders in the Premier League having done it with several players at Southampton.

Virgil van Dijk is the most obvious one, with the Dutchman shining after joining from Celtic last summer.

Centre back partner Jose Fonte has also shown noticeable improvement under Koeman, while Toby Alderweireld also shone during a loan spell before his move to Tottenham Hotspur.

Of course, Everton must first keep Stones at Goodison Park, but if they can do that, he should be very excited about working under his new manager.
