Many Tottenham Hotspur fans were left very excited after their club splashed a sizeable £25.8 million to secure the services of Erik Lamela from Roma back in the summer of 2013 and understandably so.
After all, Lamela had managed an impressive 15 goals from a wide position for the Italian side and considering the fact that he was only 21 at the time, fans felt that the striker had the potential to become a world beater in the foreseeable future.
However, things did not quite turn out the way Lamela or indeed the Spurs faithful would have wanted and the winger struggled during his first season at White Hart Lane, making only 17 appearances in total.
Upon the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino as manager at the start of the 2014/15 season, it was believed that Lamela would be able to prove his worth under his compatriot and while the youngster did improve, he could not yet justify the hefty price tag.
As a result, it was widely believed that Pochettino would be looking to dispense with the services of Lamela last season but the 44-year-old surprisingly persisted with the former Roma man and it has certainly paid dividends.
Under the demanding Pochettino, Lamela turned from a just skillful winger to one who would work his socks off for the team and proved to be crucial to Tottenham’s high pressing style of play.
Lamela no longer looked like a player who would be bullied off the ball and he seemed to become tougher both mentally as well as physically. This is not to say that Lamela did not contribute in attack as well, scoring 11 goals as well as providing 10 assists in 44 appearances in all competitions.
Despite establishing himself as a key player for Tottenham though, speculation linking Lamela with a move away from White Hart Lane has emerged once again and it was revealed by the Gazetta World recently that Inter Milan were already making moves to sign the 24-year-old.
Claims have been made that Inter vice-president Javier Zanetti has scouted Lamela during the Copa America Centenario on various occasions and with the winger’s contract at Tottenham expiring in 2018, Spurs cashing in on their Argentine international for a good return on their investment is a distinct possibility.
If indeed Tottenham do part with Lamela, Chelsea star Pedro would be a very good replacement for the winger. At first glance, Spurs fans will surely scoff at the prospect of Pedro joining Tottenham from rivals Chelsea.
In addition, the former Barcelona man has failed to impress during his debut campaign at Stamford Bridge and it remains to be seen whether he will be able to produce his best in England.
That being said though, Pedro’s qualities cannot be doubted and he would fit into Pochettino’s system at Tottenham seamlessly. It is no secret that the Spanish international possesses a lot of qualities in attack but his work off the ball is what makes him such a dream for managers.
Pedro’s natural tendency to press and harry opposition would make him an ideal player for Pochettino as well. At 28, Pedro does not quite fit into Pochettino’s vision of assembling a youthful team but his experience with Barcelona as well as the Spanish national team could prove to be crucial ahead of Spurs’ Champions League adventure.
Now the question is whether or not Chelsea would sell one of their players to Tottenham. Usually, Chelsea do not conduct business with Spurs but Pedro has not exactly managed to endear himself to the club faithful with his latest comments and if Tottenham place a decent offer, the Blues could well consider selling the winger.
