Sunderland are unlikely to try and sign a new left back this summer after the improved performances of Patrick van Aanholt, according to the Shields Gazette.

Sam Allardyce had identified the left back spot as one that needed improvement after Van Aanholt had struggled to impress under Dick Advocaat.

However, he showed significant improvement under Allardyce’s leadership becoming one of the key men in the Black Cats line up. Indeed, his upturn in form was recognised by Allardyce who opted to hand him a new and improved deal earlier this month.

That improvement has seen his need for a left-back cool according to the Shield’s Gazette and he will instead focus on other areas of the team. One area is likely to be the other full back spot, with right back currently a weak area of the team.

The club had right-back DeAndre Yedlin on loan from Tottenham Hotspur last season and he was another who showed significant improvement under the former West Ham manager’s guidance.

They are keen to make the American’s loan a permanent one, but so far have failed to reach an agreement with Spurs for him.
