Quoted by the Chronicle, Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has said he is pleased with the current level of competition in the squad.

The Magpies are expected to be busy in this summer transfer window as Benitez looks to ensure they can dominate in the Championship next season.

He is currently planning transfers ahead of the new season, with improving his forward options thought to be top of his agenda.

Adding to the defence will also be key given how poorly that area of the team has performed for several seasons.

No new faces have arrived at St. James' Park as yet but Benitez says there is already good competition in the squad that he has at his disposal.

“We have some good competition,” the Chronicle quotes him as saying. “People ask about Mitrovic or Cisse, Gini or Ayoze and Anita and Janmaat. That for me is quite positive. It means we have players competing for positions.”

It remains to be seen what kind of work that Benitez looks to do in the summer transfer window.

His latest comments suggest that he is pleased with what he currently has at his disposal, despite their relegation from the Premier League last season.

Much is likely to rest on how many players depart the club, with several stars already linked with exits.
