Southampton, Everton, West Ham, Swansea and Bournemouth have all been keeping tabs on the 24-year-old Sels, who was part of Belgium's preliminary Euro 2016 squad but he narrowly missed out on selection.
But Middlesbrough are ready to use their strong Belgian connections - which has seen them sign the likes of Jelle Vossen, Julian De Sart and Faris Haroun in recent years - to land Sels, who has three-years left on his current deal with Ghent.
Victor Valdes - FC Barcelona celebrates
Should Boro not land Sels, they are also considering making an approach for former Barcelona star Victor Valdes, who has been offered to Aitor Karanka's side, together with a number of other Premier League clubs.
34-year-old Valdes is a free agent after his contract with Manchester United expired. He finished last season on loan at Standard Liege.
