Quoted by Goal, France manager Didier Deschamps has said that Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny was always a good player despite the criticism aimed at him.

The defender has been a first-team star at the Emirates Stadium for several years now, establishing himself as their first choice centre-back.

His performances have not gone unnoticed, with some claiming he is among the best defenders in the Premier League, if not the best.

That praise has not been as forthcoming in France though, with some fans still questioning whether he is good enough for the national team.

He has worked hard to dispel those concerns this summer, as he has impressed at Euro 2016 for the hosts. Deschamps though says that Koscielny has always been a good player despite his detractors.

“Whether you like Laurent or not, Laurent performs very well for his club,” Goal quotes him as saying.

“He is a very good defender. He is good in the challenge and very good at playing the ball out from defence. I wasn’t necessarily aware he was under-rated. He has always been a good player.”

There is no denying that any criticism for Koscielny has been unwarranted given his performances for Arsenal over the years.

He has often been a star performer for them, despite the fact the rest of the team have failed to do the same on occasions.

Perhaps the perception of him in France has been based largely on Arsenal’s performances in general rather than his individual displays.
