The Mirror has reported that Arsenal have identified Alexandre Lacazette as an alternative target after missing out on Jamie Vardy this week.
The Gunners triggered the 29-year-old's £20 million release clause at Leicester City earlier this month, but the striker signed a new four-year deal this week.
Consequently, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been forced to search elsewhere, with that search leading him to Lyon it seems.
The 25-year-old marksman Lacazette, who netted 23 times last season, is thought to be admired by Wenger, whom The Mirror goes on to claim is meeting with the player's agent next week.
At the moment, Olivier Giroud represents Arsenal's one and only out-and-out centre-forward and fans of the North London club were crying out for somebody else in the second half of last season.
Would they be happy with Lacazette?
@afcstuff would be a good move. But would much prefer to get icardi— dustin (@projectksl) June 26, 2016
@CallumRankin2 is he better than Walcott and ox? Answer. Yes. Second answer. Yes. Overall? Yes.— Dinklage (@Dinklage_Afc) June 26, 2016
@Dinklage_Afc When Arsene is on a big tournament we are sure something is happening in AFC transfer business. :)— Bal78 (@krizsanb) June 26, 2016
Arsene Wenger should REALLY consider Lacazette. 63 goals in three seasons for Lyon shows how massive a player of his caliber is #afc— Arsenal_Dagbo (@cesc4real99) June 26, 2016
For anyone believing The Mirror dont....— Kris Carpenter (@AFCfreddie8) June 26, 2016
I ADORE Alex Lacazette & he fits #AFC perfectly, BUT...
Everything I hear suggests AW not keen...
Subotic, Hamsik & Lacazette. Just pull the trigger on all three please Mr Wenger #afc— Tony (@BornCapo) June 26, 2016
Some Gunners might've been worried to see France's 2-1 win over Republic of Ireland in Euro 2016 this afternoon because, well, Giroud played quite well.
He was not among the goalscorers, but he did grab two excellent assists to set up Antoine Griezmann, and supporters will be hoping Wenger does not use that display as a reason not to bolster his strikeforce this summer.
