Spurs star Harry Kane has revealed the reasons behind his brief stint as set-piece specialist for England, in quotes published by the Mirror.

The 22-year old’s performances in general have come under fire but his role as corner-kick taker and wide free-kick taker has been met with specific criticism and bemusement.

“Me taking corners was something we tried when we first met up for the warm-up game against Turkey,” said Kane. “We had a lot of tall players and they saw the delivery I had, and wanted me to put it in the box… we did it then and it stuck.”

“I've taken a few for Spurs now and again when we've been chasing a game. I wouldn't remember the last time I was the designated corner taker. I've done it, then the manager didn't want me to do it against Wales, so I didn't.”

Roy Hodgson’s decision to relieve the Spurs striker of set-piece duty was seemingly a response to public pressure and Kane’s removal from the starting XI against Slovakia was further evidence of his disappointing tournament so far.

The Tottenham star has failed to get going in front of goal and was rarely involved in much of England’s build-up play in the opening two games.

His introduction in the second-half against Slovakia failed to bear any fruits and he will be desperate to return to the starting line-up against Iceland on Sunday, given that neither Daniel Sturridge nor Jamie Vardy particularly impressed in his stead.

Kane has shown a penchant for picking up the scraps inside the box and he will best serve England by attempting to get on the end of corners rather than delivering them – something Hodgson seems to have finally realised.
