According to reports from the Stoke Sentinel, Stoke City are set to abandon their pursuit of Belgium international Axel Witsel.
Stoke City have been showing a lot of ambition in the transfer market over the last few seasons and their acquisition of the likes of Bojan Krkic, Marko Arnautovic, Xherdan Shaqiri and Giannelli Imbula among others, serves to testify this fact.
Given their ever increasing ambition, it will be no surprise if Stoke eye moves for high profile players this summer as well and reports had claimed that the Potters were planning a swoop for Zenit St. Petersburg star Axel Witsel.
Witsel has entered the final year of his contract at Zenit and it is widely expected that the 27-year-old will be leaving the Russian outfit this summer.
Even Stoke recently emerged as potential destination for Witsel and talkSPORT had claimed that the Potters had placed a bid of around £11 million for the Belgian star.
However in a development to the story, it has been claimed by the Stoke Sentinel that Stoke are now ready to abandon their pursuit for Witsel as the player’s representatives have reportedly shown very little encouragement in the Potters’ transfer proposal.
Stoke withdrawing their bid means that Tottenham’s path to sign Witsel has been cleared and it will be interesting to see if Spurs are able to complete the deal for the former Standard Liege man.
