Manchester United are planning to send James Wilson on loan for the season, and intend to sound out Aston Villa as a potential destination, The Sun report.

The paper claim Villa's Midlands rivals Birmingham City are already keen on the England under-21 international as they attempt to put together a squad capable of challenging for promotion.

Wilson is one of United's most highly rated young talents but his progress stalled under Louis van Gaal.

He would have been expected to seize the spot Marcus Rashford took last season but he was out on loan at Brighton and Hove Albion at the time, and the now full England international has leapfrogged Wilson in the pecking order.

Rashford is set to be a first team player next season while Wilson needs to go out on loan and play and score regularly in order to build his profile further, and later convince Jose Mourinho he is worthy of an opportunity.

Such is likely to be the competition for places at Old Trafford in future years though, whichever side lands Wilson on loan could also be putting themselves in a good position to sign him on a permanent basis later on.

Villa may be able to offer Wilson a better shot at promotion, but Birmingham could win favour with Old Trafford chiefs, having had Jesse Lingard at the club on loan previously.
