Aston Villa have announced that Stylian Petrov will train with the first-team squad over pre-season.
Villa announced this afternoon that Petrov would join them as they gear up for the new campaign, as he looks to earn a new contract at the Midlands club.
The 36-year-old retired from football in 2013 after being diagnosed with leukaemia, but after successfully beating the illness he now wants to restart his career.
Whether Petrov will earn a contract with Villa remains to be seen, but Collymore and Lineker were delighted that the Bulgarian had been given a chance to stake his claim.
Petrov was part of the coaching team at Villa last season, but seems intent of restarting his playing career now.
Villa’s pre-season is due to start in the coming weeks, with Roberto Di Matteo due to take his side to Austria.
Villa will be preparing for the new campaign, which they will spend in the Championship following their relegation from the Premier League.
The Claret and Blues’ competitive campaign gets underway on August 7th, with a match against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.
