The move has been heralded as a major coup for the Gers, who are keen to make their mark in the Scottish Premiership after such a long absence in the lower leagues.
Barton will bring a wealth of experience to a relatively young Gers side, having spent a number of years playing in the Premier League and Championship.
However, Heskey has suggested that the midfielder may not know what he has gotten himself into by moving to Glasgow Rangers.
“Joey has shown in the English championship he's got the ability to boss games. But you've got to do it on the pitch and not on Twitter,” the Herald quotes him saying.
“I've played here and I know how intense it is. A lot of people thrive off being on edge. He's probably one of them. But I'm not sure if he knows what he's got himself into. Time will tell. He will find out soon.”
Burnley's Joey Barton
It will certainly be interesting to see how Barton will perform in the Scottish Premiership next season.
He has already put big pressure on his own shoulders with comments suggesting rivals such as Celtic captain Scott Brown are not in his league as a player.
It will be intriguing to see if he can live up to his own hype, with him certainly set to play a major role in any success Rangers hope to enjoy next season.
