HITC Sport understands a host of clubs are chasing the former Barnsley defender.

Barnsley's George Williams in action

Former Barnsley defender George Williams has emerged as a target for a number of League One clubs, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Williams is a free agent after Barnsley surprisingly decided to let Williams leave Oakwell after initially offering the full-back a new deal.

The 23-year-old, who joined Barnsley from non-league Worcester City in December 2014, burst on to the scene during the second half of the season at Oakwell.

Williams spent the first couple of months of last season on loan at Barrow, making 15 appearances for the National League side before breaking into the Barnsley first-team in January.

The right-back filled in at left-back due to injuries in January and he quickly established himself as a regular under Paul Heckingbottom.

Williams made 23 appearances in total for Barnsley last season, playing in both the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Final and the League One play-off final successes at Wembley.

News of Williams' availabilty has alerted a number of clubs with the defender catching the eye in League One last term as he helped Barnsley win promotion to the Championship.

Charlton Athletic, Oxford United, Peterborough United, Southend United and MK Dons are all weighing up moves for Williams this summer as they look to strengthen their defensive options.
