Matt Phillips is confident that former Blackpool and Scotland teammate Matt Gilks will make a considerable contribution should he complete a move to Rangers in the near future, the Evening Times reports.

The 34-year-old is currently without a club after being released by Burnley, but the Evening Times reports that he may be the latest name to sign for the Light Blues this summer having held talks with the Scottish Premiership side about a potential switch on Wednesday.

And Phillips has explained why the stopper would be a valuable asset to Mark Warburton's squad should a deal get done.

"He's a good lad, dependable and a terrific player as well. He's got a few caps and been in a lot of squads so anyone with that kind of international pedigree is obviously a very capable player," he told the Evening Times.

"He's a good lad around the place which goes a long way to helping the atmosphere in a dressing room.

"Maybe people down south might be surprised that players like this are coming to Scottish football but there are big clubs up here and some of the football is of a really high standard."

With Cammy Bell departing in recent days, Warburton arguably needed to strengthen his options between the sticks ahead of the new campaign.

Gilks brings a huge amount of experience, and is at an age where he could potentially be with the Gers for several years to come.

And with Phillips suggesting that he is the kind of character that will enhance the mood amongst the squad, it appears that Gilks could be an excellent addition to the side, even if he assumes the role of Wes Foderingham's understudy, as he will help instil the belief within the team that they do have the quality to move back towards the summit in the top flight.
