Spain's David de Gea
It was a big surprise to see the Luka Modric-less Croats shock the reigning European Champions, who had taken the lead through Alvaro Morata in the first half, only to be pegged back to 1-1 just before the halftime whistle. In an action packed second half, Inter star Ivan Perisic scored the winner, but only after Spanish captain Sergio Ramos saw a penalty saved by Monaco's Danijel Subasic.
But though many of the Spanish side will be smarting from the defeat, United favourite De Gea will be particularly disappointed, so soon after claiming the number one journey from legendary stopper Iker Casillas, even if he had little protection in front of him.
Spain's De Gea reacts
De Gea had gone 494 minutes before conceding the equaliser, being beaten at the near post by former Blackburn flop Nikola Kalinic.
The 25-year-old had a couple of poor moments in the game, from weak punches to one awful piece of dawdling that nearly saw him lobbed as he was out of his box by Ivan Rakitic - the crossbar, far post and goal line all necessary to save his blushes.
Below are some of the Twitter comments supporters had on the Premier League star's performance:
Even as a United fan you have to admit that De Gea could never reach Neuer level or prime Casillas, it is what it is— Sam (@samhodgsonn) June 21, 2016
@Asterweireld im also the first united fan to say De Gea is the third best goal keeper in the world— bęñ thë pûšśÿ šłåÿēr (@DeGeaDepression) June 22, 2016

People slating De Gea for one bad match should go and see Manchester United videos of past 3 years. Single handedly kept the season alive— Aswin (@Aswinv001) June 22, 2016
David De Gea had a shocker for Spain last night, possibly his worst performance since his debut for United in the Charity Shield in 2011.— Gary Thompson (@gary302) June 22, 2016
Kicking was always De Gea's weakness. Put United defenders in trouble a lot of times over the past 3 seasons.— Arun (@boysmunna) June 22, 2016
Also if Neuer played for United and De Gea was at Bayern, rival fans would say De Gea > Neuer.— Jonah (@MuellerHolic) June 21, 2016
