Quoted by the Birmingham Mail, Aston Villa manager Roberto di Matteo says Tommy Elphick’s experience in the Championship was why he moved to bring him to Villa Park.

The defender completed a move from Premier League side Bournemouth on Monday, signing a three-year deal at the club.

He is Di Matteo’s first signing of the summer in what is likely to be a very busy first transfer window for the Italian at the club.

Elphick has principally been brought in to improve a defence that was abysmal last season as Villa were relegated from the Premier League.

Di Matteo though says that it is his experience of winning promotion from the Championship with Bournemouth that was a big factor.

“I'm really pleased to bring Tommy to the football club," the Birmingham Mail quotes him saying.

“He is a fantastic player and also a fantastic character which is very important. He knows what is required to win promotion to the Premier League from the Championship and that experience will be invaluable.”

There is no denying that Villa were in need of adding experience to their current playing squad after last season.

More than that, they needed players with experience of the Championship, which will prove to be a completely different prospect to the Premier League. Elphick brings that in abundance and it will be intriguing to see if their Villa's signings are of a similar ilk.
