Newcastle United are considering making a move for Arsenal defender Isaac Hayden as Rafael Benitez looks to add more Championship experience to his ranks ahead of the new season, the Shields Gazette reports.

United need to add more depth at the back as the Shields Gazette claims that Steven Taylor plans to leave St James' Park when his contract comes to an end this month, having rejected a new deal.

And the Gunners youngster has been earmarked as a potential target. Although the 21-year-old is yet to make his Premier League debut for Arsene Wenger's side, he spent this past season on loan with Hull City, making 18 appearances to help the Tigers finish in the top six in the Championship.

But with the defender struggling to hold down a first-team spot during his time at the KC Stadium, it seems highly unlikely that he would be anything more than a fringe player at the Emirates next season, so Wenger would surely be willing to let him move away for another year.

Should that potential move involve heading to a club in the second tier, the Magpies would arguably be the perfect option as, at that level, they would undoubtedly represent the closest that a side could come to what he may face at Arsenal in the future in terms of club stature and fan expectation.
